The Republican transgender reality star hopes to replace Gavin Newsom, who may be recalled by voters.

Caitlyn Jenner has filed paperwork to run for governor of California as a potential recall against current Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom gains steam.

Jenner is a longtime Republican who supported Donald Trump's 2016 run for president (though records show she actually didn't vote in that election or most others). The Olympic gold medalist and former spouse of Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner describes herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal. On the latter point, she has remained mostly silent as Republican state legislatures have waged war on transgender people all year, passing odious bills denying them rights and demonizing their existence.

Before this year's assault on trans people, Donald Trump himself targeted trans rights as president, banning them from the military and using them as a wedge issue to cement his hold on voters. Jenner eventually admitted her support for Trump was a mistake. But, according to the Los Angeles Times, Jenner's nascent campaign team is filled with "Trump loyalists," including an individual raising money for her who was involved in the rally that preceded and incited the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Jenner's tweet announcing her run lacked specifics on her platform, instead detailing her history as a Californian and criticizing the state's "over-restrictive" lockdown (the state now has the lowest COVID-19 rate in the continental United States) and ts notoriously high taxes. The recall against Newsom is being pushed by Republican figures like Jenner; the GOP is a nearly powerless minority in California, the nation's most populous state.

Equality California, the state's LGBTQ+ organization, did not express support for Jenner's historic run.
