A man has turned himself in to police in Santa Cruz, Calif., in connection with an assault on a gay man targeted because of his sexual orientation.
Cole White (pictured), 24, came into the Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office on Wednesday around noon, according to TheMercury News. He surrendered a day after a judge signed a $50,000 warrant for his arrest. White will be charged with assault and a hate-crime allegation.
White is accused of beating a man in his 30s outside a local gay-friendly bar, the Blue Lagoon, on Sunday morning. The victim of the crime has not been identified. He suffered bruises, cuts, and a possible broken nose. White is also accused of yelling antigay slurs at the man before the fight.
One of White's friends was arrested on charges of stealing the victim's cell phone because he took a photo of White. Also arrested was a woman who is accused of punching another gay man at the same club early Sunday morning.
